early this morning i watched 'an army' of black birds settle on our post oak trees -
i figured out they were after a cicada breakfast! which must equal to a t-bone with all  that meat.
we've been eating dinner on the back patio in the evenings and watching the
hummingbirds sit on the tiniest of bare oak branches - it's a delightful gentle scene,,,

but the bigger birds (even cardinals) start their chase on the cicadas and it gets crazy.
cicadas are clumsy and clunky flyers - and they screech so loud!

i caught one and let my dog sniff and paw at it -
got a quick sumi-e painting and let it go,,,
back into that cycle.

my husband, (bless him), told me it was henry david thoreau's birthday today.
i love hdt!
a few short quotes by him:
"an early morning walk is a blessing for the whole day."
"do what you love. know your own bone; gnaw at it, bury it, unearth it, and gnaw it still."
"it is never too late to give up our prejudices."

"it takes two to speak the truth: one to speak, and another to hear."

  1. Love the drawing - very animated. Yesterday Pasha crunched on a grasshopper. Eating bugs doesn't appeal to me!

  2. Husbands can be so thoughtful! I shall take a walk now, in honor of HDT, even tho today is not his birthday. Like your drawings. Japanese-y.
